Yankees trade Kontos, will send Cervelli to AAA

Via Mark Feinsand, the Yankees will trade reliever George Kontos to the Giants for catcher Chris Stewart. Stewart, a career .200/.273/.293 hitter will be the Yankees’ backup catcher, meaning that Francisco Cervelli will be optioned to Triple-A to start the season. Much as a part of me is happy I won’t have to see Cervelli for a while, I really don’t understand why the Yankees would make this trade. They need another catcher at Triple-A thanks to Austin Romine‘s back injury, yes, but Stewart doesn’t seem like much of an upgrade over Cervelli (and this is coming from me!), and a potentially useful reliever seems like an awfully steep price to pay to temporarily fill a spot on the Triple-A roster.
