Cody Eppley sent down

The second half of today’s roster move has been announced. Cody Eppley is heading back to the Empire State Yankees. The New York Yankees Public Relations Twitter account (@YankeesPR) stated: “Cody Eppley was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/WB to make room on the roster for D.J. Mitchell.” Someone should let those folks know that it is the “Empire State Yankees,” but at any rate, several beat writers for the Yankees have mentioned that Freddy Garcia has been told that he is heading for the bullpen. That means that either David Phelps or D.J. Mitchell will get a spot start before Andy Pettitte arrives in mid-May. The guess here is that it will be Phelps.

Cody Eppley did a fine job in his brief time with the Yankees. He pitched in four games for a total of 5.1 innings and had an ERA of 1.69 to go with a WHIP of 1.13. It seems hard to imagine Freddy Garcia being able to come close to those numbers in the bullpen, but apparently, the Yankees do not want to eat his contract just yet. Much of this will be clarified during the telecast and in Girardi’s post game comments. Stay tuned.
